Yr8 Overnewton Alice Mosaics with Debbie Qadri : A group of Year 8 students design and make their own mosaics with artist in residence Debbie Qadri. The mosaics take their inspiration from Lewis Caroll's Alice in wonderland and a mosaic that Debbie Qadri made about Alice. The students will be making ceramic features for the mosaic. The finished artworks on display in a courtyard of Overnewton College
here are the finished artworks made by year eight students at Overnewton Anglican College.
The mosaics are one metre square each. The students worked in groups of four to design the mosaic, make ceramic features and then to construct the mosaic.
These students should be very proud of themselves, they've done a great job.

Making features out of clay for alice mosaics
Here is some work by the students made in clay and painted with underglazes. When they are dry they will be fired and then glazed.

Above: A rose bush by Selina -

above: Made by Isabella and Ashlee.
This ceramic feature has been made in two halves so that it doesn't break.
It will be reassembled on the mosaic.

Above: Roses by Emily. Emily is painting them red. She made them by making strips of clay and shaping them round and round.

Above: Hearts by Kristen. These will be used in the mosaic design.

making the ceramic features
The year 8 students are making features for their mosaics out of clay. They are applying underglazes to decorate them, before the bisque firing. After the bisque firing the artworks will be glazed and then fired again. They will come out of this second firing, very shiny and colourful. Then they will be put into mosaics.
